Another Three Rare Bird Sightings!

Although I don’t get out too often, I managed to escape into the field over a few days in October, during the peak of the migratory season. While up at Wingfield Level on October 16, I was pleased with the Warbler activity. In one stretch of trees I saw a Black & White Warbler, a Yellow Warbler, an American Redstart all within minutes of each other. Shortly thereafter, I spotted a small bird foraging on the floor under the canopy of the trees. A careful study of it and a few dozen photographs later, there was no doubt that it was an Ovenbird.

The last reported sighting that I can find of an Ovenbird in St.Kitts was 1922, although no doubt they have visited since then!

Additionally, visiting birder, Andy Keister, reported seeing a Least Bittern in the Golf course Pond on September 27, 2014. The Least Bittern is a rare bird indeed, with only one previous sighting being recorded here, in 2006. Also reported seen by Andy, was a Buff-breasted Sandpiper, which he spotted on the Golf Course on the same day. This is the first report of a Buff-breasted Sandpiper on St.Kitts!
