GLOBAL BIG DAY 2026! The results are in!
Every year, birders throughout the world participate in GLOBAL BIG DAY. It is always held on the second Saturday in May, every year! Birders have 24 hours to go out in search of birds, and report their sightings on e-bird, a database website managed by Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
Global Big Day by the numbers
- 2.1 million people identified birds with Merlin Bird ID—Merlin’s Biggest Day ever!
- 22.2 million Merlin Sound ID detections
- 8,023 species reported
- 4,127,929 bird observations
- 197,640 eBird checklists submitted
- 80,245 eBirders from 203 countries
Birders in St. Kitts and Nevis formed their team and named it Birders SKN. At the crack of dawn off we went, sighing birds here and there, up in the sky, in the trees, in the ponds, above the sea, in the towns and all throughout the twin island state! When the day was finished, we had seen a whopping 65 different bird species.
Based on the expected birds to be seen on any particular territory, it turns out that Birders SKN team saw an unbelievable 78% of the birds we were expected to see! Number one in the Caribbean! See list below.
And interesting enough, we beat our neighbors to the East, Antigua and Barbuda, by one single specie!
Another victory of sorts!
